a love story
i guess the whole world has been shaken by the passing of our very own founding father and our first pm. by our, i mean singapore.
but i am here not to talk about his legacy for that we all know very clearly. growing up, i was ignorant about politics (still a little clueless by the way) and chose to believe that ignorance is bliss. going into primary school, in p4, i remember very clearly, we had our social studies lessons? or was it called something else back then. pardon me. i cant remember hahaha for it was one and a half decades ago. oops now you know my age LOL.
anyway, i am digressing. back to the point. clips of past videos and all have been shown alot for the past week. it is, with a heavy heart that i write this. i am not interested in politics. i am not interested in power. the only thing that stood out to me was their love. how true, how stable and how lasting it was.
you will likely agree with me that mrslky looked normal, plain even but you couldnt deny that there was something about her, just by looking at her pictures. how sure she was of herself. how her capabilities actl shone through. she was quite the powerful woman, yet she was quiet and humble. always 2 steps behind her husband, like a good asian wife. she was indeed the supporting woman behind our dear founding father.
so instead of the past political clips, i went searching for more dreary but tear inducting stuff. like her passing in 2010, her funeral, pictures of them. mrlky's eulogy for her. i read all the articles on their love story. like how when she got a stroke and had her left vision impaired, he was there, for her on her left side. in order to get her to focus more on her left. i believe that helped trememdously in her recovery.. also when her stroke happened again and she was bedridden for 2 years at least. mrlky was there for her throughout the whole time. i teared when i read how she would stay awake and wait up for his phonecalls if he was overseas for travel.
perhaps the part that made me bawl like a baby was when i watched the video of mrlky giving her kisses while she was lying there in her coffin. it struck me deep that love does exist. maybe not in the way that the stories we read when we were younger led us to believe but it exists in a more realistic way. the way you support each other.. in health in sickness and even in death. it exists when mrlky and mrslky's wish was for their ashes to be mixed together in death so that they may be together in life and in death. the life where they shared a fulfilling 63 years together. and in death, till eternity where they may forever be together.. forever is a long time but in death, forever is a certainty.
so even though he believes himself to be agnostic, i really really wish that they may be reunited upon their passing and that they find each other, to have and to hold again, somewhere else.
"Her last wish she shared with me was to enjoin our children to have our ashes placed together as we were in life,"
IN THE end, there was just a man who loved his wife till the end.
He walked to her casket and placed a single stalk of red rose, green leaves still on its stem, on her body.
He raised his 87-year-old body and walked half a step towards the head of the casket, supporting himself on the frame.
Then, he bent towards her and reached for her face with his right hand. He brought his hand back to his lips and planted a kiss on her forehead.
As though he could not bear to part, he did that again. And then he walked away, composed and unaided.
and i cried. tears flowed unobstructed and freely. you should watch the video if you havent.

''I should find solace at her 89 years of life well lived. But at this moment of final parting, my heart is heavy with sorrow and grief,''
